14 Ways to Propose on Valentine’s Day

One of the most popular days of the year for marriage proposals is Valentine's Day.  If you are considering proposing on this most romantic day of days, perhaps one of the following ideas will inspire you in making your moment memorable:

1. Be Theatrical: Catch a play on Valentine's Day.  Call the theater in advance to see if it would be possible to propose on stage.  Choose a play or musical with a wedding/love-inspired theme.  The stage manager will help you plan something unforgettable.  Remember to buy tickets early as Valentine's Day is a popular evening.

2. Say it with Sweets: Give your sweetie a heart-shape box of chocolates in which you’ve swapped one of the chocolates with her engagement ring.  Or buy a bag of Conversation Hearts candies and find one that says "Marry Me.”  As the two of you casually share the bag of candy, slip out the distinctive confection and say, "This one is perfect!"

3. Recreate Your First Date: Make reservations at the same restaurant you went to on your first date.  Play a CD of the song that was playing on the radio that significant day, and/or make a picnic of the foods and wine you shared that day.  Tell your beloved that you've recreated the moment because it was on that date you met the person you're going to marry.”

4. A Romantic Spot: Find the most romantic spot in your area and go there with your Valentine.  Tell her all the reasons why you love her.  As the two of you are taking in the picturesque scenery, say, "I wanted to bring you to a spot that rivals your beauty to ask you if you would consider spending the rest of your life with me.”

5. At a Restaurant: There should be “a host” of people to help you make things perfect.  Select a restaurant with an enchanting ambiance.  Secure your reservations early and ask to speak to someone about proposing that evening.  He or she should be versed with regards to the nicest way to pop the question at their locale.

6. Fortune Cookies and Roses:  With tweezers, pull out the fortunes of a few cookies and replace them with your own personal fortune.  Your hand-crafted fortunes can reflect how “fortunate” you are to have met someone so lovely.  Present your beloved with a cookie and rose for several days in a row.  On V-day, the fortune can be simple: “Will you marry me?”

7. Tastefully Made: Prepare a romantic dinner for two. During the meal temporarily excuse yourself.  Return to the dinner table dressed in your finest clothes and get down on one knee.

8. Go Big: Rent a billboard on Valentine’s Day along a road your sweetheart takes to or from work.  Call her before she departs and ask her to check out the interesting sign you spotted on her route!

9. Say It In Snow: Find a location with an expanse of unblemished snow.  Tamp an outline of a big heart with your boots, and add your initials to the center.  Fill a thermos of hot chocolate then take your Valentine on a walk or hike.  As you "happen" upon your artwork, stop and pop the question!

10. Puppy Love: Buy a box of Valentines like the ones exchanged by elementary-aged children.  On the valentines, write various reasons why you love her.  Then place them everywhere -- in a coat pocket, in the refrigerator, behind the windshield wiper, etc.  On Valentine’s Day, present the last valentine --and your proposal.

11. Lights Out: Let your proposal light up her life.  Write your proposition in glow-in–the-dark letters (available at craft stores) and affix them to her bedroom ceiling.  Outline your message with lots of glow-in–the-dark stars so when the lights are out, it will look like a captivating starry night.  Place the ring in a box or card under her pillow, as if the “love fairy” left it there.

12. Everything’s Coming Up Roses:  Give her roses: lots and lots of roses!  May she find them everywhere - in the bathtub, on the bed, in her car…On Valentine’s Day, attach your proposal and engagement ring to the final bunch.

13. Say It In a Song: Choose a love song that includes a marriage proposal (such as “Marry You” by Bruno Mars).  Share the CD with your beloved – include a note that says, "I think this song says it all."

14. Wax Poetic:  What is more romantic than a poem written for the one you love?  Even if your poem is as uncomplicated as "Roses are red, violets are blue," if it includes a couple of cherished memories and inside jokes (plus a few rhyming words!) she should be delighted to see the ending to be “Will you marry me?”
